ShapeShifted is a strategic block puzzle game developed by Neanderthal Mountain Interactive. It builds on the classic falling-block genre with a unique twist: a risk-reward challenge system where you choose a block size (1-6), solve a word or math puzzle, and earn the right to pick your exact piece from over 300 shape variants.

The game features five power-ups, 22 achievements across six rarity tiers, mobile touch controls, and a progression system that rewards skillful play.

Points are earned primarily by clearing complete horizontal lines. The more lines you clear at once, the bigger the multiplier:

• Single (1 line): 100 points (×1)
• Double (2 lines): 250 points (×2.5)
• Triple (3 lines): 400 points (×4)
• Quad (4 lines): 800 points (×8)

Clearing multiple lines at once is always more valuable — a quad clear is worth 8 single-line clears!

The game ends when blocks stack up to the top of the playing grid and a new piece cannot be placed. To avoid game over, focus on:

• Keeping your stack as low and flat as possible
• Clearing lines consistently rather than building too high
• Avoiding holes (empty spaces covered by blocks)
• Using power-ups strategically when in danger

ShapeShifted features six block size categories containing over 300 unique shape variants — far more variety than traditional block puzzle games:

• Size 1 — Single: One cell (1 variant)
• Size 2 — Domino: Two cells, horizontal or vertical (2 variants)
• Size 3 — Triominos: Lines and L-shapes (6 variants)
• Size 4 — Tetrominoes: Classic four-cell shapes including lines, T, L, square, and zigzags (19 variants)
• Size 5 — Pentominoes: Complex five-cell shapes (63 variants)
• Size 6 — Hexominoes: The largest blocks with massive variety (216 variants)

The Challenge system lets you choose which size block you want and — if you solve the challenge — pick the exact shape you need.

You advance to the next level by clearing lines. Generally, clearing 10 lines advances you one level. As you level up:

• Drop speed increases: Pieces fall faster, requiring quicker decisions
• Score multiplier increases: All points are multiplied by your level number

This creates a risk/reward dynamic - higher levels are harder but more rewarding.

ShapeShifted supports two keyboard layouts:

Arrow Keys:

• ← / → : Move piece left/right
• ↓ : Soft drop (faster fall)
• ↑ : Rotate piece

WASD Keys:

• A / D : Move piece left/right
• S : Soft drop
• W : Rotate piece

Additional:

• Spacebar : Hard drop (instant placement)
• P or Esc : Pause game

On touch devices, use these gestures:

• Swipe Left/Right: Move piece horizontally
• Swipe Down: Soft drop
• Tap: Rotate piece clockwise
• Swipe Up: Hard drop

The game is fully responsive and works on phones and tablets.

Soft Drop (Down Arrow/S): Makes the piece fall faster while held, but you can still move and rotate it as it descends.

Hard Drop (Spacebar): Instantly places the piece at the lowest possible position. No further adjustments possible once activated.

Hard drop is faster and more precise, making it the preferred choice for experienced players. Use the cyan center guide line to see exactly where your piece will land.

Yes! ShapeShifted automatically saves your progress to your browser's local storage. This includes:

• High scores
• Total lines cleared (lifetime)
• Achievements unlocked
• Settings preferences
• Power-ups earned

Your data persists between sessions as long as you use the same browser and don't clear your browser data.

Progress can be lost if:

• Browser data cleared: Clearing cookies/cache removes local storage
• Private/Incognito mode: Data isn't saved in private browsing
• Different browser: Progress doesn't sync between browsers
• Different device: Local storage is device-specific

To protect your progress, avoid clearing browser data for this site and always use the same browser.

Currently, ShapeShifted stores all data locally in your browser, so progress cannot be automatically transferred between devices. This is a privacy-friendly approach that doesn't require accounts or cloud storage.

We're considering adding optional cloud save features in future updates for players who want cross-device syncing.

If you want to start fresh, you can reset your progress by clearing your browser's local storage for the ShapeShifted website. The exact steps vary by browser:

• Chrome: Settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data → Cookies and site data
• Firefox: Settings → Privacy → Cookies and Site Data → Manage Data
• Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data

Warning: This permanently deletes all your scores, achievements, and settings.

If you're experiencing lag or slow performance, try these solutions:

• Close other tabs: Other browser tabs consume memory
• Refresh the page: Clears temporary memory issues
• Update your browser: Older versions may have performance issues
• Disable browser extensions: Some extensions can cause conflicts
• Check your internet connection: Slow connections can affect loading

ShapeShifted has basic offline capabilities through service worker caching. Once you've loaded the game once, much of it should work offline. However, some features like ads may require an internet connection.

For the best experience, we recommend playing with an active internet connection.

If you're not hearing game sounds:

• Check that sound is enabled in the game settings (speaker icon)
• Make sure your device volume isn't muted
• Some browsers block auto-play audio - try clicking/tapping the game first
• Check if your browser has blocked audio for this site

Power-ups are special abilities that help during gameplay. You start each game with one of each:

• Bomb: Clears a section of blocks
• Eraser: Removes an entire row
• Swap: Replaces your current block with a random new one (any size)
• Freeze: Temporarily slows drop speed
• Smart Drop: Helps find optimal placement for the current piece

Use them strategically — they're most valuable when your stack is dangerously high!

ShapeShifted features 22 achievements across six rarity tiers:

• Uncommon: Growing skill and consistency
• Rare: Real dedication required
• Epic: Difficult goals for experienced players
• Legendary: Ultimate challenges for masters
• Secret: Hidden achievements discovered through unique play

View your achievements from the main menu. Progress is tracked automatically and achievements unlock when their conditions are met.

The Challenge system is ShapeShifted's signature mechanic. Every 10 blocks, a Challenge button appears. Here's how it works:

1. Choose a block size (1-6): Bigger = harder challenge, better reward
2. Choose Word or Math challenge: Word challenges have you guessing hidden words; math challenges scale in difficulty
3. Solve it: Word challenges give you 20 seconds and 3 guesses. Math challenges give you 15 seconds
4. Earn your reward: Success lets you pick your exact block shape. Failure gives you a random large block (size 4-6) as a penalty

You can also Quick Pick to skip the challenge and get a random block, or just ignore the button and keep playing normally.

ShapeShifted offers optional premium features through Gumroad for players who want to support development. Premium features may include:

• Ad-free gameplay experience
• Additional power-ups or abilities
• Exclusive visual themes

The core game is completely free to play with all essential features available to everyone.
