The primary goal in ShapeShifted is simple: score as many points as possible by strategically placing falling shapes to create and clear complete horizontal lines across the game grid.
ShapeShifted is an endless game where you compete against yourself to achieve the highest score possible. The game continues as long as you can successfully place pieces without letting them stack to the top of the grid. Your success is measured by:
The game ends when a new piece cannot be placed on the grid because existing blocks have stacked too high. To avoid this fate, always keep the stack as low as possible and prioritize clearing lines over building height.
ShapeShifted supports multiple control schemes to accommodate different play styles. Whether you prefer keyboard controls or touch input on mobile devices, you'll find intuitive ways to manipulate your pieces.
| Action | Primary Key | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Move Left | โ | A |
| Move Right | โ | D |
| Soft Drop (Move Down) | โ | S |
| Rotate Piece | โ | W |
| Hard Drop | Space | โ |
| Pause Game | P | Esc |
On mobile devices, ShapeShifted uses intuitive touch and swipe gestures:
The Hard Drop (Spacebar) is your best friend for fast gameplay. It instantly places the piece at the lowest possible position, saving valuable time and letting you move on to the next piece quickly.
The playing field in ShapeShifted is a rectangular grid where all the action takes place. Understanding how the grid works is essential for effective piece placement and line clearing.
The ShapeShifted grid is 9 columns wide and 16 rows tall. This compact configuration is designed to work with the game's six block sizesโwide enough for strategic placement, but tight enough that every decision matters. Each cell in the grid can hold exactly one block unit.
New pieces enter the grid from the top center. The drop guide (a vertical cyan line) shows you exactly where your current piece will land if you hard drop it. Use this guide to precisely position pieces before committing to placement.
Pieces cannot move beyond the left or right edges of the grid. When a piece reaches the bottom or lands on top of existing blocks, it locks into place and a new piece spawns at the top.
Expert players divide the grid into zones: the left side, center, and right side. Keeping all zones relatively balanced prevents dangerous buildup in any one area and gives you more options for piece placement.
Unlike traditional block puzzle games that use a fixed set of shapes, ShapeShifted features six block size categories containing over 300 unique shape variants. The size of the block you receive depends on your level, the challenge system, and sometimes luck.
A single cell. The easiest to place, perfect for filling small gaps. 1 variant.
Two connected cells, horizontal or vertical. Simple and flexible. 2 variants.
Three-cell shapes including straight lines and L-shapes. 6 variants across all rotations.
Classic four-cell shapes: straight lines, L-shapes, T-shapes, squares, and zigzags. 19 variants.
Complex five-cell shapes with many unique forms. Harder to place but powerful for clearing. 63 variants.
The largest and most challenging blocks. Massive variety including rectangles, staircases, and branching shapes. 216 variants.
Smaller blocks (sizes 1-3) are easier to place but earn fewer points through the challenge system. Larger blocks (sizes 4-6) require harder challenges to earn, but completing those challenges lets you pick the exact shape you need. This risk-reward tradeoff is the heart of ShapeShifted's strategy.
Understanding how points are awarded is crucial for maximizing your score. ShapeShifted rewards clearing multiple lines at once with increasingly generous multipliers.
| Lines Cleared | Name | Multiplier | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Line | Single | ร1 | 100 |
| 2 Lines | Double | ร2.5 | 250 |
| 3 Lines | Triple | ร4 | 400 |
| 4 Lines | Quad | ร8 | 800 |
The multiplier system means that clearing four lines at once is worth far more than clearing four lines individually. A single quad clear (800 points) is worth the same as eight single-line clears!
For maximum points, focus on clearing multiple lines at once rather than singles. Use the Challenge system to earn larger blocks (sizes 4-6) that are better suited for multi-line clears. Keep your stack flat with one column open for straight-line pieces.
Lines are cleared when every cell in a horizontal row is filled with blocks. The cleared line disappears and you earn points. Mastering efficient line clearing is the key to success in ShapeShifted.
You can clear up to four lines simultaneously by placing a single piece. Multi-line clears are always more valuable than clearing lines one at a time:
The real scoring power comes from clearing multiple lines with a single piece. The combo multiplier system rewards you exponentially:
This means clearing 4 lines at once is worth 8 times more than clearing a single line โ a massive incentive to set up multi-line clears!
As you clear lines, you'll advance through levels. Each level brings increased difficulty but also higher scoring potential. Understanding how levels work helps you prepare for the increasing challenge.
You advance to the next level after clearing a certain number of lines. Generally, you need to clear 10 lines per level to advance. For example:
With each new level, the game becomes more challenging:
Drop speed starts at 600ms and decreases by 50ms per level, bottoming out at 200ms. At higher levels, pieces fall very quickly. Be prepared to make fast decisions and use hard drops extensively. The Challenge system becomes even more valuable here โ earning the right piece can save your game!
ShapeShifted includes five power-ups that can help you out of tough situations. These abilities add a strategic layer on top of the core block-placement gameplay. Each one starts at a count of 1 per new game.
Clears a section of blocks from the grid, helping you escape dangerous buildups.
Removes an entire row from the grid. Perfect for emergency line clearing when your stack is high.
Replaces your current falling block with a completely random new one (any size 1-6). A lifeline when you get a piece that doesn't fit.
Temporarily slows down the drop speed, giving you more time to think and place carefully.
Helps find optimal placement for the current piece. Great when you're under pressure at high speeds.
Save your power-ups for emergencies! It's tempting to use them early, but they're most valuable when your stack is dangerously high or when you're on the verge of a game over. The "Purist" achievement rewards completing a game without using any power-ups at all.
The Challenge system is ShapeShifted's signature feature โ a risk-reward mechanic that gives you control over which blocks you receive. Instead of relying purely on random pieces, you can earn the exact shape you need.
Every 10 blocks (with a 3-block cooldown), a Challenge button appears during gameplay. Activating it launches a four-step process:
There's also a Quick Pick option that skips the challenge entirely and gives you a random block of any size (1-6).
When your board is messy, choose a small block size (1-2) for an easy challenge and a precise fill piece. When your board is clean and flat, go big (5-6) โ if you solve the harder challenge, you can pick the perfect large piece for a massive multi-line clear.
ShapeShifted includes a comprehensive achievement system with 22 unique achievements to unlock. Achievements provide long-term goals and recognize your skill progression.
